I have an old traditional muzzleloader with a browned barrel. While it was being stored, a portion of the barrel about 6" long developed some rust. I'd like to clean it off with steel wool and redo it. I've re-blued rifle barrels before, but not browned ones. Is there a solution I can buy or make that will restore it?

Brownells has three different ones. Give them a call, they are quite helpful.

Browning is nothing more than stabilized rust. The best product out there for browning a barrel is Laurel Mountain Forge's barrel brown and degreaser. - http://laurelmountainforge.com/barrel_brown.htm

You may be able to work with the rust that's already there to get a good color match to the rest of the barrel. Take a look at the LMF instruction sheet and see if you can do that by following the steps for carding off and stabilizing the rust.

If you can't laugh at yourself, give me a call. I'll gladly laugh at you.

Thanks, guys. I've had the rifle for over 20 years and I want to make sure it's in good shape when I finally hand it down to my son.
