This is probably a dumb question but I'm new to trail cams and can't find the answer in the manual. If I hook a solar panel to augment my batteries, do the batteries need to be the rechargeable variety?

It depends on the trail cam design. If it does not have a switch to designate which type of battery, then no. You'll be better off installing no batteries in the cam and running it off the solar panel's battery pack via cable.
