My oldest daughter is a senior next year and my youngest starts High School next year. I really don't like hearing of potential cuts to educational benefits. The 8 year residency requirement I can understand as they want the benefit to apply to Texans. Reducing the hours covered and having all benefits expire 15 years after end of service is just stupid. The 15 year expiration will not affect either of my kids, but I feel for those that would be affected by it if this nonsense is passed.

Instead of cutting Veterans benefits, how about we save money by not making more Veterans?

If our government would stop sending troops to every corner of the world, the burden on the system would drop dramatically.

Bring them all home.

I was asked if we should declare war on Isis. I immediately said yes, then paused and said no. Why should we try to help those that hate us when Isis poses no threat to us yet. I want all our guys in Muslim countrys home. They can't be saved. Let them take care of their own.

Veterans speak out against proposal to strip Hazelwood benefits
Quote:
SAN ANTONIO - Local veterans gathered to voice their frustration about proposed legislation to reduce key state benefits tied to education.

Veterans met outside VFW Post 76 to denounce a bill cutting free tuition hours at state-funded campuses for dependents or a surviving spouse. Under the Hazlewood Legacy Act they currently receive 150 hours. The proposal slashes that number to 60 hours. Another restriction would require those reduced hours to be used within 15 years of a veteran's honorable discharge from service.

“That is a gross injustice only those legislators who did not have time to serve our country in the military uniform would come up with. That needs to be washed out completely," says Placido Salazar, a Vietnam War veteran.

The bill is in the Senate for a vote.

I was made aware of this last, right before my first born graduates.
We are planning and counting on this for college.

We need to up Abbot... all these politicians pay lip service to vets.

We need to get in front of the media and raise hell.

The only thing that works is a threat to their reelection.

House delays vote on cutting veteran education benefits

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A Texas lawmaker has pushed back a vote on a much-watched bill that would make cuts to a free college tuition program for veterans’ children.

The bill - meant to address the program’s rising costs -was briefly discussed Friday. But Republican Rep. John Zerwas postponed debate until Sunday, citing the measure’s “complexity and emotion.”

Before floor discussion even began, Democratic Rep. Joe Farias made an impassioned plea opposing Zerwas’ bill. The Vietnam veteran told colleagues, “Think twice, and open your heart to those that have endured the most.”

Already Senate-approved, the bill tightens veteran eligibility requirements, cuts the number of free tuition hours and stipulates that benefits expire.

Not only are they voting against Veterans with this bill, they are refusing to even hear testimony by veterans and for the veterans. bang

Please write or call your state legislators. This needs to be stopped NOW !!! It will all but eliminate to ability for your kids to use it. 15 years after you get out is not right. A young man or woman coming back from war and has a baby. The baby will be in high school when the 15 years comes up. I have a 22 yr. old son who finally decided to go to college. One of the main reasons he is going is the Hazelwood Act paying his tuition. If this bill passes it will only pay for one year. He will have to work his way through after that. I'm retired and can help him some but not as much as the Hazelwood Act does. I'd really like for him to be able to go to school and concentrate on school not work and school. Please write or call ASAP

Thanks upsslim, flagup

Call your Texas House Representative right now and ask them to protect the Hazlewood Veterans Education Act.

Who Represents Me and who to contact?

http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/Home.aspx up

Script: Please put Texas veterans and their families first this legislative session by voting against S.B. 1735. I support the Hazlewood Act and our military families. (Feel free to put it in your own words.)

S.B. 1735 would take away the Hazlewood education benefit for thousands of children of veterans. That’s not right, and that’s not Texan.

Please support our veterans and their families this Memorial Day weekend by calling your Texas House Representative and asking them to protect the Hazlewood Act.

House Votes to Keep Free Tuition for Some Veterans' Kidsup

Quote:
An effort to overhaul the state’s tuition-for-veterans program dissolved in the Texas House on Sunday, with the sponsor of the bill offering an amendment that would leave the program virtually unchanged from its current form.

The action by Rep. John Zerwas, R-Richmond, would gut Senate Bill 1735, which would have made many children of veterans ineligible for free tuition. Zerwas had been pushing the bill at the request of universities, which have said that the "legacy" benefit was costing them too much.

But after more than two hours of debate on the day before Memorial Day, the bill was temporarily pulled down because of a procedural challenge. And while the House moved on to other business, Zerwas notified opponents of the bill that he had relented. SB 1735 didn't appear to have the votes, he said.

“My sense from the House votes is that it was pretty clear that they didn’t want to change the legacy program,” Zerwas said.
