A guy I go to church with asked me about loading some "light" .30-30 rounds for his son. His son is a 2nd grader so 7 or 8 years old but kinda small for his age.
He wants a round that will have as little recoil as possible that the kid can learn to shoot with. He's going to be shooting a old bolt action .30-30 so that opens up some more bullet choices.
Anybody ever done something like this? got a recipe?
I guess a better question would be....can/should it be done. I think a .243 might be a better option for the kid.

Careful and stick to the powder manufactures guideline on powder selection and charge weights or you could have a Secondary Explosion Effect http://forums.handloads.com/archive/forum_posts.asp?TID=13753Use the data Kmon1 posted and also look for reduced load on those sites. Never go below the recommended minimum loads. GL

Check the cast boolits website. Look for 'cat sneeze' loads. They also have links to some of the old reloading manuals, so that you can check the data .http://www.castpics.net/LoadData/OM/default.html Lead bullets are the key. I have loaded 30-06 to the recoil where a 8yr old has fun shooting it. As an example of published data, 120gr cast,7.0gr Red Dot, 1400fps. You can go lower, but when you go really low, check them in the rifle they will be used in so that they will not stick in the barrel, then increase .5grain. Some folks go as far as using a round ball instead of a bullet.

Per Hodgdons Website with 110gr bullets:
IMR 4895: 33.8gr @ 2,290 fps IMR 3031: 30.5gr @ 2281 fps IMR 4198: 22.5gr @ 2168 fps Hod 4198: 23.0gr @ 2174 fps
All of those are Min loads and should be soft shooting.

And with the 60% of max load listed by hodgdon with 4895 you can go well below that starting load safely.

Their is one important thing that use on my lite loads is a case filler material. I shoot a 180 grain lead bullet in a 1903a3 Springfield with 10 grains of unique. The filler will hold the powder against the primer for better and more accurate ignition.

While most pistol powders are position sensitive, Unique is not. Filler not needed with Unique.

I've used one of the .7cc Lee scoops full of Titegroup behind a 110grn lead with decent accuracy out of 30-30, .308, and 30-06. I'm not sure on the exact weight of the charge.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.
