I am not a big turkey hunter but I have called in a few. I am taking my girlfriends kids turkey hunting this weekend and was wondering if the youth season is too early to have much success in calling. Thanks

Depends on where you are I guess. Got several shots of strutting toms on game cam and not the usual big hen groups. Something seems to have shifted in the last few weeks at my place near Brackett.

Thanks Scoop. I will be hunting near Cuero. Spring only season here. Not sure what to expect saturday. I hunted opening weekend last year and had plenty of action with jakes which is all I hope for for the little ones.

Jakes are always easy pickens early in the spring...they've been kicked away from their hen by the gobblers and running on their own. They'll come to about any call right now.

Sounds great. Last year during opening week most of the jakes were with hens. I'd call one jake in and 3 other jakes and 4 hens would come with him. Then all 4 jakes would take turns beating up my decoys. I would really like for them to see some of that.

I'm much further north than you but yesterday I saw two separate groups with toms in them strutting big time. It may not be peak but it has started here. I'm in Grayson county 40 miles south of the Red River. Good luck. You might fined it easier to get them in as there's been no pressure on them. I got to within 50 feet before the group moved off.

Do not forget midday action, lots of the time gobblers and jakes will separate from the hens they have been following around since early morning, looking for more receptive hens. Have killed lots of gobblers in early season between 10 and noon

Made one gobble yesterday from across the road. I think it is just starting to pick up speed in central Texas

Called in several groups on Saturday morning in Goliad County, but no 'youths' available to close the deal. Hoping they'll be as responsive next weekend! Toms where all gobbling and strutting their stuff.

We hunted Saturday and Sunday and never saw or heard a bird. The area nearby where they sometimes roost didn't appear to hold any birds this weekend. I've had one turkey on camera in the last two weeks and that was a tom Saturday afternoon when we weren't there. We will get to try them again in a few weeks. Thanks for all the help.
