Hey Guys,
I'm working on building a protein feeder out of a 55 gallon drum. I'm making a three way drop tube out of 4" 14 gauge square tubing. I have seen that some of the protein feeder manufactures incorporate some type of flow regulator in the protein tube. Do you guys think this is necessary? I plan to put a triangular pyramid in the bottom to direct the flow to the three feed spouts and I could probably make some type of sleeve that would move up and down inside the drop tube that would regulate the flow over the pyramid but I would rather not. Let me know what you guys think. I guess I need to go buy a bag of protein and fill the tube up to see how it works...
Thanks,
Jason

Depending how long your spouts are, feed might just continually fall out if you don't put a lip around the bottom.

You will need some sort of baffle system inside the upright tube or lip on the front of each port to slow the feed flow down. Go to a store who sells tube type feeders and see how each look. Lot of different designs out there.

Thanks for the response.
I will definitely put a lip on the end of each feed tube. Probably weld a piece of 3/8 rebar in the end. Ya'll think that will be sufficient?

Tape a piece of cardboard across it and then put feed it in to see what height you will need.

Remember weight of feed = pressure.

Using popcorn peanuts opposed to bags of corn will not get a good result.

Add in wind, barimetric pressure and humidity.

Otherwise known as trial and error. 2cents

Well I finally got around to finishing my protein feeder. Going to install at the lease this weekend bit thought I would post up some pics.
Made a pyramid to help direct the flow.

Cut the top out big enough to slide the 4" down piece into.

Here you see where I slid it down 2" to slow the flow down. Also used 3/8" rebar for a lip.

Here's a finished pic. It's sitting 40" off the ground.

That looks great. Did you slope the three ports, I did one out of 4" pvc put about 10-15 deg. Slope on the three ports, using corn and protein pellets. The corn slides fine but the pellets got stuck without the slope.

Thanks
Yep. There's about 5 degrees on the 3 ports.
