Got a new pup and have been working on fetch for a while. Broke out the retreiver bumpers toady and he was excited to go get them, but would bring them back to me by carrying the rope in his mouth, not the bumper itself. When he sits at my side he grabs the bumper, but not when he fetches....
Any ideas?

Try paint rollers...no rope to worry about.

Don't worry about it, keep it fun. When you get to birds there aren't any ropes.

Try frozen birds.

When the dog starts to get older and has been going through force fetch for a while, start smacking the bumpers out of his or her mouth until he/she gets the hold right.
