My buddy and I are wanting to get into 3 Gun soon, and wanted to know where some of the preferred matches are held. This is a completely new animal for us, so any advice is appreciated.

There are a lot of matches around Fort Worth and Austin. Google should turn up some in your area.

Etts in waxahatchie and tacpro both hold 3 gun matches. Check out 3mils right and north texas multigun.

North Texas Multigun conducts a monthly 3-gun match as well as a monthly plate match and shotgun/carbine match. They have moved from ETTS in waxahachi to triple c shooting facility in Cresson. Tac Pro conducts a spring and fall match as well as an annual pistol match. TDSA hosts a monthly match as well.
