New Years Eve is the last day of the season here and I still had 1 tag out of 6 left to fill. The plan was to go out with the crossbow and try to fill my last tag.

Well it was cold and windy (-13 with wind to 30 mph) but I decided to go anyways. I put on long johns, insulated pants, insulated snow camo overalls, 2 sweaters, soft shell jacket, insulated snow camo parka, balaclava and a toque on top of the balaclava.

Waddled into a hardwood bush and sat on the ground about 20 yards from a main run connecting a bedding area and a standing bean field. Got settled in about 2:00 pm.

At 4:30 pm I see movement about 100 yards away. At first glance I thought it was fawn. As it got closer I decided it was a small doe. As it got closer I thought it's an average size doe. At 20 yards the deer gave me a nice broadside shot and I took it as the last tag I had left was for doe or buck.

Deer gives the nice donkey kick goes 30 yards and stops for 5 or 6 seconds. It than walks 5 more yards and tips over. It puts it head down right away any and about 60 seconds later it legs twitch twice and and is than still. I wait another 20 minutes and slowly approach.

As I am walking up to the deer it seems to be getting bigger. When I get to it it appears to be the biggest doe I have ever seen. I was like that can't be right so I check the organs and sure enough it is a buck that has already shed it's antlers.

Turned out to be a good size deer - 198 lbs dressed. I must have been hallucinating from the cold when I first saw it.

Wow! Wonder if you could have used an antlerless tag if you were in Texas?

That's an ear tag correct? I'm not knocking I have no problem shooting tagged deer. I'm just curious if he was tagged what did he look like with antlers? Depending on when he was released and how often pictures caught him should be easy to track down. His body looks huge I would like to see him with antlers if you can help. Thanks and congrats.

That is not an ear tag in the sense that you are thinking. That is my game tag that I put on on him after I killed him. Normally it would be placed on the antlers (like in my avatar) but in the event that this is not possible we are required to slit the ear and place the tag through the ear. Tags are a different colour every year for easy ID by the game wardens.

I would have loved to have seen his head gear as well. I am going to go back and look for the sheds on the weekend. If my brain hadn't been addled by the cold I probably would have realized It was a huge buck and I might have passed and hoped to take him next year with his head gear intact. Based on his teeth I would guess age at 3.5-4.5 years. I suspect he could have gone 300 lbs+ in a year or two as his dressed weight of 198 would put him around 250 lbs on the hoof.

HF and/or whitetail breeding is not legal in Ontario. All whitetail are native genetics and free range/LF. I don't have any history of this guy on the 2 cameras that I have in this bush lot. This bush (mainly sugar maple, beech, ash, pine and cedar) is about 3000 acres with no roads and limited walking trails. I had to drag this guy about 5/8 of a mile on the toboggan up and down 2 ravines - took me about 2 hours.

I don't per say have an issue with HF if done responsibly but it is not an option for us.

Here's a shot of him right after I loaded him onto the toboggan just before I put the tag on him:

We had a thaw over Christmas and lost most of our snow. Fortunately we had enough left to make the toboggan work or I would have had to call in reinforcements. For scale the toboggan is 24 inches wide and 60 inches long.

21 cubic foot and a 17 cubic foot. The 21 is totally full and is all venison from this season. 17 footer is overflow and is waterfowl, grouse and fish and what ever else we buy from the store that needs freezing. I have 4 kids - 2 in high school and 2 in university. They all love venison and whenever the 2 in university visit home they go back to school with a cooler load of venison.

We rarely ever buy red meat other than some ribs once in awhile. Fortunately I own my company and as long as the bills are paid and the family duties are taken care of I spend my time hunting and fishing. I probably spend a 150 days per year in the field either hunting, fishing or scouting.
