So I know a buck will make a rub to rid the velvet but will he make a rub outside of velvet? I have this area I hunt that I keep seeing a big buck on camera and catch glimpses of him during the day he comes from the same area each time. I would like to set up closer to what I think his trail is where I found a rub this morning. I do have old scrapes that are beginning to be closed off from leaves, indicating the rut is bout over correct? With that being said I still have young bucks chasing does, but the peak was the first week of December from what I can tell from trail cam pics. I have passed several deer waiting for this one buck but now my freezer is empty and I need a deer.

Yes. Bucks will continue to rub beyond velvet. New rubs will show up throughout the season.

The young bucks will chase pretty much all season. There is a good chance that your yearling will start coming in toward the end of the season and will draw one out. Our place will see a two week "lull" after the rut with very little movement from the mature deer. The last two weeks, it seems to go back to normal.

Bucks will freshen up scrapes the next day after a rain storm maybe you can catch him then. Wait for rain the get on his scrape cuz he will be marking his territory in daylight hrs.

Yes. Bucks make rubs throughout the entire rut, pre, peak and post.

they have a gland on their forehead that is mucho important in communication (I believe second to the tarsal gland) and yes they use the rub after they are out of velvet, for how long depends on each individual deer, could be a week or could be the entire season, you can slap a trail cam on that rub for more intel...

Wisco u didn't know bout this gland, I have asked several questions all season bout deer hunting and even know I felt like I shouldn't ask cause it sounded simple but I have learned so much. My entire season has been hit and miss. I am hunting public and with a bow, I have definitely learned more about hunting than shooting. I grew up hunting a lease in blanco county where the feeder would go off and 10-15 deer would come. It was shooting fish in a barrel. Now hunting public I'm learning to hunt instead of shooting. It has been a tough year, I have put the time before the season to find a spot then the hours spent in a blind to learn their pattern, but have yet to connect. I know it will happen just have to be patient. I have passed several deer so no meat has not been the deer but me waiting on a buck I have on camera. This buck would be my personal best and I miss him by a day, a few hours and twice him just being out of bow range. This season has been fun and irritating, but I have enjoyed the chase. I do appreciate everyone actually answering my questions and not bashing a simple question.
