Was wondering if others on here are using other types of feed in place of typical protein feed marketed for deer? This spring I started using high fat 12% protein horse feed in my free choice feeder. It also has trace minerals for coat, skeletal, joint and muscle maintenance. The main reason I tried it was due to the feed store being out of antler max when I was there and the biggest kicker was it is the same price as corn for 50lb bag. Last trip I paid $8.35 a bag. Not sure of the benefits to antler development but the deer I'm feeding seem to love it and the pics I am getting they appear to be very healthy. I know natural browse has been good in my area so they have plenty to eat but they are tearing this stuff up. I have a few pics of a 10pt that shows up pretty regular at my broadcast feeder that is built like a Clydesdale (don't have cam at protein feeder) but sure he hits it. If someone would PM me they can post the pic of this fat boy. Anyways I was just curious if others feed anything else. Thanks

We don't always have the gravity feeders going, but when we do, we fill them with goat feed. Easy to find at the local feed stores and has all the minerals they need.

Any feed 12-16% protein is going to be fine; you're paying for marketing when you buy RackBuilder Plus 2000.

We feed 20%. If we are going to take the time expense and effort I want to try and give them something better than is already out there. During the right times of the year and conditions browse can be really hi protein so no since in shorting them.

When times are hard anything will help them out although I do believe that feed specifically developed for deer is better than that developed for livestock. Although we did fill our feeders with some lactating goat feed when our feed store was out... it was during the summer and we made a lot of jokes about it helping the does out and the deer readily consumed it like anything else we put out... except alfalfa, wont touch the stuff. Talked to a guy at the gas station one day that fed dog food and claimed great results, so who knows.

I used rice bran pellets, mixed with corn.

And Antlermax breeder elite 300 + mixed with corn .

Two parts corn to one.

Seems to feed fine no clogs and the deer eat it up.

All look a lot healther than they did a year ago.
