Fellow told me today the people he works for have a permit to kill deer with spotlights at night. They work the pecan bottoms all day and kill deer at night.

Probably CD permits. Those big pecan plantations along in San Saba tend to be heavy handed with them

Did some research on Depredation Permits and found that they run $250 and TPWD sets the time length of permits. Basically from growing season through harvest of crops. Didn't find anything on hours of validity such as night or day only that centerfire guns were required for taking deer. Interesting because this fellow I talked with works just down river a couple of miles from one of our properties.

I know they have rules you have to follow but some friends said that the local GW from Concho County in the 90's went on one. Said the farmers had a permit to kill like 60 or so deer off of his cotton and wheat land. They shot them at night and had to clean and donate all the meat. Said they shot them at random with a spotlight when a deer stood still. Said they killed on mainframe 6x6 with mule deer forked G2s' in full velvet that night in the late summer.

I'd hate to have a lease bordering that place and lose a good buck to their night hunting.

He did mention they left the trophy bucks for family members to hunt. He also said the meat was all donated to neighboring county food for the needy projects. He mentioned there were three individuals listed to shoot the deer under the permit.

It used to be the growers had to have a high fence to keep the deer out. The permits were for the deer who got in the enclosure. Well the legislature changed the rule to allow those cotton and wheat farmers use the permit to shoot MD on open fields.Plus they took the oversight off the field biologist to monitor the harvest and use. The change allows almost anyone with a commercial crop a Dep permit.
